Have you ever felt disconnected, overwhelmed, anxious or a sense of not quite being “with it”? These can be signs of a root chakra imbalance. The root chakra, or Muladhara in Sanskrit, is the first of the seven main energy points in the body. It is the foundation of the entire chakra system. It represents our primal and earthly needs like safety, survival, health, our material and monetary existence, and our ability to focus and manifest our needs. The “root” implies exactly what you would expect, like the roots of a tree; it is our connection to the Earth. At this time in our history, we are probably more disconnected than we have ever been. We are consistently affected by emitting WIFI signals that mess with our natural electromagnetic field (EMF), and the stress from work, to put food on the table, to get the house, to get the car, etc, etc, etc. It is common for a lot of us to worry, to lose sleep, to get anxious and withdrawal. Some of us are in constant fight or flight mode, so how do we reconnect in the here and now? The reasons for disconnect can vary but the most effective way to ground yourself, is meditation. If you think you “can’t” meditate, you would be surprised how often you already do it. Lose yourself in a song? You’re meditating. In deep thought during your morning shower? You’re meditating. Praying? Guess what? You’re meditating. Sometimes you snap out of a mild trance, like a daydream and you don’t remember the detail but that too, is a state of meditation. You can start grounding yourself with mindful walking. Concentrate on every breath and every step as it hits the Earth, feeling the connection between your feet and the ground. Graduate yourself to a seated quick meditation; both feet on the ground, you can opt to have one grounding stone in your hand (like smoky quartz, black tourmaline or whatever you are most drawn to) and one between your feet. Breathe deeply in through the nose and out through the mouth while imagining a red ribbon extending from the base of your spine, through the floor, through the ground, all the way to the core of the Earth. Say to yourself, “I am safe, I am grounded and I am centered upon Mother Earth”. Without grounding of the root chakra, we lack the stability for true growth. Life is hard sometimes but you have the right to receive and you have the right to be here. If you need a little more help, don’t be afraid to ask.
